My Grandpa's Eyes
by Cindy M. Hutchings

Gleaming white high-rise
clad in terra cotta ornamentation
topped with windowed pyramid
once Tallest Building in the West

daily I gaze upon its lustre

one morning, envision
my grandfather

in his early years, when he
strung electric trolley wires
and Seattle core power lines

in his later years
when he was partner
at RW Beck engineering firm

my grandfather, with his eye
for structural design

must have daily raised his gaze
in admiration of this same tower
crowned with blue light.
