'Midst Green Grass and Dew-steeped Flowers
by Sharmagne Leland-St. John
   from a poem by Emily Brontë*

'Midst green grass and dew-steeped flowers,
You spent your childhood upon the moors,
Counting out the hours.

I'd pictured you beneath rose bowers
Or on Yorkshire's beachy shores,
'Midst green grass and dew-steeped flowers.

Once I dreamt you cloistered in ivory towers,
Not as a dweller out of doors,
Counting out the hours.

Brave you were, not one who cowers.
You penned your poems and did your chores
'Midst green grass and dew-steeped flowers.

You were a girl with esoteric powers;
You spent your childhood upon the moors,
'Midst green grass and dew-steeped flowers.
Counting out the hours.
