Poetry Prompt For July 2023

The July poetry prompt will be to create a Viator.

A Viator is a refrain poem. The first line of the first stanza moves down one line with each verse. A four-stanza viator will have four lines per stanza, a five-stanza viator will have five lines per stanza and so on. It is an optional structure and meter. Created by Robin Skelton, 20th century. Suggested by Jane Lang.

Please italicize your “Refrain” line as it progresses through the poem:

How is it that water and rocks
seem to have no limits?
The rocks are not about to move.
The water simply goes
where it is allowed to go.

I often try to reason out life–
how it is that water and rocks
compose their own music…
become a symphony, a synthesis
that happens without effort
