Brown Finesse, Thoroughbred Flat Runner
by MFrostDelaney

My favorite picture of my dad shows him
together with his first love, Mums, his horse.
The frame is fashioned like an entranceway,
each upper corner snipped to make the shot
a view into a room inside his heart.
They’re standing outside in the winter’s snow.
It is a pose, not taken on a whim,
to show her lines, a thoroughbred, of course.
Her bridle’s held by Daddy–make her stay.
But in the moment’s shutter click they’re caught
as closest ones who can’t be kept apart.
It is a bond between the two who know
each other’s best and worst. And unlike peeps,
they’ll never turn away–this is for keeps.
