The Day This Old Hippy Was Baptized in Country
by Candace Turner

Lights lowered; crowd hushed …
It was Willie:
he began to sing some old cowboy song
… “Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground” …

I fell in love

His wiry body crisscrosses the stage
Fingers strum his guitar

He sings to me,
Only me

Crowd scramble to catch his tossed
sweaty bandanas

I remain still, transfixed

Want to feel his unshaven whiskered face
scratch my own smooth cheeks

His whisky throated, pot smoking
Voice drowns me with desire

He sings to me
Only me
