Plea
    (to the Garden Spirit)
by Candace Armstrong

Give back the use of knees to tend you.
Wrap that green—that overtaking green
around inner understanding
to refresh the joy, and, yes,
the pride once felt
in the modest advance of every seed.
Disguise the hazards of nature
that tend to play upon thoughts
grown weary and troubled.
Revive wonder in the order
of natural growing things.

Let me garden with delight and abandon again,
breathe the renewing life in your soil and leaf,
delight in your abundant omnipresence,
smile at the end of the day.
