Crocus in the Mud
by Candace Armstrong

Mother of Saffron,
your delicate stigmas
have been hand-picked
for centuries on sunny
Mediterranean hillsides.

In my humble garden,
you do not flourish.
It’s neither hot nor dry enough
but your silver-edged,
purple cup-like blossoms
still warm my heart.
