Red Hook
by Sharmagne Leland-St.John
after the photo Farm in Red Hook, NY by the poet

Snow-plough, not far ahead of us,
made it easy to maneuver
these backwoods country roads
with their strips
of dangerous black ice.

Leafless trees, red barns, cattle
dotted the snowdrift landscapes
spread before us
on either side
of the slippery road.

You made me laugh
when you turned to me
straight-faced and declared,
"Those cows are outstanding
in their field."

It took me a moment to get the joke.

In the warmth of the truck
I snuggled closer to you,
happy to be together,
enjoying this late winter
adventure.
