Woman in a Green Room, by Robert Berény, 1927

The Girl in Mourning Black
by Vaughn Neeld

In the solitude of a blue-green room
furnished with a brown-velvet, overstuffed sofa,
a red settee, and a three-legged, pink-draped table
on which stands a black, jug-eared amphora,
the girl, dressed in mourning black,
head bowed, as if in prayer, sits in silence
as she studies the beaded necklace
in her lap as if fingering a sacred rosary.

Is the urn just an urn? or is it filled
with her mother's ashes?
