Storm Watch: CSI
by Vaughn Neeld
… when the wind gets up and the water rises … –Susan Laughter Meyers
Upstream storm clouds, blue-black with gauze-draped edges,
quickly rush away like sneak thieves seeking safety
after ransacking an evacuated neighborhood.
The heavy downpour scattered leaves, downed twigs,
and drenched daisies like discarded jewels
upon the water-drenched ground.
As the rising water hurries downstream,
it flattens ferns, primroses, and
trembling water reeds.
The temperature drops, and the watery air
riffles leaves and grass and sends a damp chill
gliding upon the wind in the willows.
From behind warm glass,
I investigate the scene,
survey the damage, drink hot cocoa.
