lessons
by cheryl latif
in one seamless moment
i cease fooling with words
sense a presence
look up to find a doe
outside my window.
framed by lush green
conifers & ferns
her small, majestic stature
breathless wild beauty, stilled.
in the common language of babes
two fawns nestle against her legs
their coats dotted
their movements less than fluid.
slowly, i breathe in
slowly, as though anything less measured
might ripple the air between us
send them away.
i long for an offering
a way to dissolve all that stands between us
—more than glass
— less than skin—
and watch while she guides by example
(keeping me in her sight)
teaching life's lessons step by step:
graceful stretch of sinew
lithe intent.
