Happy Mother's Day Mom
by Candace Turner

The withered woman with the cloudy blue eyes
Turns her head in my direction
Her eyes reflect question marks

My heart sinks
She doesn't remember me today

Black Eyed Susans, my favorite flower
I hope you brought some for your mother too

An afternoon spent on idle conversation
Occasional memories surface
Real or imagined

Dinnertime at the nursing home
Time for me to leave
Mom whispers in my ear
I had a daughter once but she's gone now
Thank you again Miss for the flowers

I hug the remnants of my mother
Breathe in her lavender scent
Keep the smile on my face
Flick away my tears
