Leaving
For My Daughter, On Her Need To Remain In Australia
by Sheri Lindner

I understand that
you are pulled
like a compass needle to its magnetic pole
to this path
that has carved its trace
in spite of nature’s urgency
to seed it over,
this path that is obstinate in the face of
the wind’s imperative
and the bird’s scat.

I understand
that you cannot turn away
from this road that grass and time
will not swallow up,
this road that if abandoned now
would frequent your dreams
from which you would always
awaken just before knowing
where it leads.
