Dialogue:  Super Ego and the ID

by Quiet Sea Gull

1
Why?

2
I love her.

1
That's what he tells you.

2
But I do love her.

1
He tells you that.  He tells you so you won't feel guilty.

2
Oh, really?  You have no idea what this feels like!

1
Don't I?  I don't exactly leave your side.  We're in this together, and nothing about it works.

2
But you can't understand.  It's not your nature.  You can't understand how it
feels when she fixes me with those glowing, green eyes, the thrill--

1
Oh, I'm aware of all those feelings.   He intoxicates you with her.  You've got to
keep him in control.  You've got to put those feelings into perspective.

2
I do, but she makes me feel-- I can't find the words.  I'm happy, I'm
exhilarated, and I'm so content, knowing she loves me.

1
And what about your responsibilities?

2
What about them?  I'm doing what I'm supposed to do.

1
You're lying and you're cheating.  Is that what you're supposed to do?  You're supposed to love someone else.

2
I do love her.  I'm being very loyal.

1
She wouldn't think so.

2
But I am.  You know that.  You know how I feel.

1
I do know how you feel, and you're just going through the motions.

2
What do you mean?  You've certainly been right there when we've made love.

1
Oh, of all people to try to b.s, you're trying to b.s. me?

2
No.  I'm not!  You know I meet all my responsibilities, domestic and foreign.

1
Your foreign policy could use a review.

2
I haven't changed anything at home.

1
You are changed.  You don't have the same emotion.

2
Now, you're complaining that I don't let him run free at home.

1
I'm not complaining.  You know very well there's a time and place when you're
supposed to let him loose.

2
And that time and place is always one you pick.

1
Yes.  And that's the way it's supposed to be.  That's why we've survived as a
species.

2
Well, you know, he picks a lot of times and places and women that are a hell
of lot more interesting than the ones you pick, and, besides, you always pick
the same place, same woman.  In fact, you've only picked one.

1
No, you picked her a long time ago and made a commitment.

2
No, he and I picked her; you made the commitment.

1
And that's as it should be.  The two of you picked well, that time!  And, I'm the one of us who's supposed to make the commitments.  Heaven help us if it was left to the two of you.  You'd commit us to one hell of lot more than we could handle.

2
You have no faith in us.

1
Well, I have some in you; none in
him.

2
You say we picked well that one time only because you approved.

1
Yes, and at the time, she had everything you and he wanted.  Now, I'm
hearing the same thing I heard when you picked her.

2
No you aren't.

1
Sounds the same to me.

2
You aren't being fair.  She and I connect on so many levels.

1
Like what?

2
We're both artists.  Our souls reach out, were searching--.  We inspire each
other.

1
Oh, he uses her to rouse your libido, your dark side.  Her body and yours meld, and then he drives you crazy.

2
Yes!  I need that!  I've always craved it!  She frees me!!

1
It isn't her; it's him!  You let him run wild.  He's in charge!

2
No, it's not him.  It's magic!  You and I and he are all in charge.  She and I are
so much more than the three of us together!  She fires my imagination, my
creativity, she awakens glorious emotions, and I awaken the same in her, no,
different, but just as deep.

1
I don't understand that.  I just know you're about to really screw things up
for all of us.

2
How?

1
Well, what's to become of her?

2
Which her?

1
The first her.

2
I love her.

1
And what is she going to say to that?

2
Which she?

1
The most recent she.

2
She will say that we will live in the moment
