Afternoon Mood
…after the painting by Guilda Dimi
by Sharmagne Leland-St.John

Ranunculus, your favourite flower
Planted 'neath the garden bower

French roses are their other name
Some have said they look the same.

Yellow roses brighten the day
And augur fortune on its way

I sought them where the bramble rose
And creamy-pale hortensia grows

When trimmed and cut, petals opened up
Hence we placed them in the bowl and cup

The perfumed scent of these blooms
Wafted through the parlour rooms

The red and pink and purple hues
Summoned forth the poet's muse.
