Daffodils and Roses
…after the painting by Guilda Dimi
by Mary Audrey Kneipp

Invisible in this painting, a butterfly
flits inside an opened window
as if signaled by these daffodils
and roses, yellow ones and red,
to come inside, be fed. Unseen
except for inner senses,
the butterfly descends.
It pauses on the rim of a cup—
exquisite, artfully centered here,
and in a second it will light upon
the red rose, then the gold, and
dine on beauty. I too am feasting
on sensuous delight of sunshine,
of daffodils and roses, yellow and red,
against a backdrop dark as night
of flowers almost hidden,
but advancing into the light.
