Deep Reflection
by Maralee Gerke
In the Autumn forest,
a placid lake mirrors the fall foliage.
A meditation on the turning season.
Beneath the thin quiet skin
of the water is a completely
obscured ancient world.
Memories of leaves
that fell in last great release
enlace to become a heavy mat.
Lethargic fish don't ripple
the shining surface
as they glide close to reeds and cattails.
Turtles and salamanders
disturb the muddy bottom.
as they sink into winters grasp.
I stand at the edge, skin
prickled with cold,
contemplating lives
lived on other shores.
Silenced by the deep
yet fleeting reflection of trees.
