Mi nombre es Carlita de Silva
by Karla Linn Merrifield

I take much pride of my feet,
how you say delicados,
in fine-tooled tiny pumps,
heels touching, toes pointing out
in first position, poised to plié
and arabesque into city life, stage lights—
Aprobación y elogios!
My red scarf unfurls,
flagging my arrival con brio.
I sit straight,
tilt my head down,
a distaining swan
eyeing el gringo cerdo.
I am de Silva,
my well-landed hildago
is waiting a matinee performance.

after Fried Kahlo's "The Bus", 1929
