If You Asked Me
by Jane Lang

if you asked me, "do you remember?"
my answer..."yes," secluded, safe harbor
gentle cove, houses lamp-lit, a
vessel under red-at-night-delight
leaving for an evening sail

if you asked me, "do you remember?"
my answer..."yes," me, the inexperienced
crew; he, a sea-worthy captain, and those
lines-to-ready, knots to tie—an orange buoy
marked safe passage, ready for our anchor

if you asked me, "do you remember?"
my answer..."how could I forget?" the
enormity of his presence, magic nights
from sun-filled days: all gone now, all
remembered—I ache for him still
