Happy Halloween
by Nancy Cummins Bierman

The full moon is a blue moon
An impish autumn breeze
Rattles sunflower skeletons
Steals faded leaves from trees

The sun is setting early
The breeze blows out the light
As goblins, ghosts, and witches
Come out to haunt the night

A question rides the teasing wind
A hoot owl wants to know
Who-who is that who tiptoes past
Jolly Jack O’Lantern’s glow

In darkened streets a sudden gust
Shapes phantoms out of swirling leaves
A dog is howling at the moon
What a perfect Halloween
