Faith
by Paulette Demers Turco
–in response to Christ in a Storm on the Sea of Galilee
       by Rembrandt van Rijn

They feel the pull of black abyss below,
the power of these tumulous waves–their low
and roll could throw them all into the sea.
Splatter pounds the deck. The lines fly free.
The sails hang heavy from the mast of oak,
soaked through. The thunderous clouds above evoke
peril. The till is pressed against the gunwale.
Each clamorous crash of sea creates a runnel
past their feet while Christ is calm and sleeps.
They wake him, beg him–intercede. He sweeps
the clouds away. “Where is your faith?” he asks,
masking his disappointment, wise of his tasks.
Though they have seen men perish in the sea,
He is their guiding light in Galilee.

“Where is your faith?” –Luke 8:24-25.
