ABOUT THE BOOK:

“This beautiful debut chapbook includes an assortment of poems exploring love, loss, and the self. Darah wields her poetry within when the daffodils die to bring her readers on a journey through their (and her) relationship with themselves and with those they choose to surround themselves with. Her willingness to write about the many facets of love and the way she challenges both herself and the long-standing truths within society about women and their place within the world makes this collection of poetry one of courage, defiance, and an appreciation for the overlooked things in life.”

ADVANCE PRAISE:

“In her debut collection, Darah Schillinger delivers her personal insights about the multi-faceted nature of love. Her stunning images reveal depth of thought, careful attention to detail, and diction that is nicely paced. when the daffodils die, is a rewarding read and bodes well for the future of a uniquely gifted and exciting new poet.”
–Michael Escoubas, author, Steve Henderson in Poetry and Paint

“As an inveterate plant lover (sunflowers being my favorite) I was immediately taken by Darah Schillinger’s title poem, the daffodils die, 'and have crumpled brown into the soil / before May even comes, / leaving the gulch empty and green / laid bare before the brackish water. / heralding spring with the rot.' I have felt that way many times in my life. This poet showcases a fresh voice on the literary scene. when the daffodils die is a collection that will make an impact.”
–Sharmagne Leland-St. John, author, Images: A Collection of Ekphrastic Poetry

FROM THE BOOK:

distance

by Darah Schillinger

I want his smell sunk into my skin
at the temples
where the hair meets my face.
I want to smell him in my pillow
late at night and early
in the mornings after he’s gone
and left me with nothing but my thoughts and my saturated hairline.

what can I do when he leaves but wait for him to come back
just as it all starts to fade from my sheets
when nothing but my fingers have touched my lips in days,
the taste of almonds is gone from my tongue,
and I’ve finally washed the brown rings he’s left in my mugs
what can I do?
nothing
but wait for the smell to fade just in time
for his shoes to return to my door,
laced and waiting for him
as I do.
