Signs of Autumn
by Gay Williford

Autumn winds whisper change.
Woolen mittens are donned to confront the cold;
frost covers lingering pumpkins.
Cardinals
and jackdaws skitter through leafless trees,
pondering a late migratory decision.
Smoke curls up from burning leaves
dissipating in the pale periwinkle sky.
Hot cider and freshly made donuts are doled out,
as the air fills with the scents of fall.
