Autumn’s Bounty
by Mark Fleisher

It came when autumn came
nature’s new palette
of crimson, gold, russet
painting maples, aspens, cottonwoods,
It came when autumn came
a steaming mug of mulled cider
marshmallows dancing
in the swirl of cocoa
It came when autumn came
a frosty morning when furnaces
sound an unwelcome click
It came when autumn came
counting of ballots,
honoring veterans,
choosing scary masks,
setting a holiday table
It came when autumn came
a fleet of tailgate parties,
cheering for the alma mater
It came when autumn came
the thought of winter chill
set aside for now
