Dealing With Deception
by Gay Williford

It came when autumn came.
Entering intrusively on chilly breezes,
it’s footfall was muted and reticent
as it pervaded our home life.

My husband’s behavior was changing,
his affections lessening with each frost,
detaching himself from me and our family
like a fall leaf from its tree.

Suspicious clues were prevalent–
the late-night office hours,
the numerous sudden trips away,
signs I chose to ignore, as his betrayal
was so unbelievable and painful.

As Autumn came to a frigid close,
confrontation became expedient–
to deal openly with these obvious deceptions,
and weigh the repair status of our relationship
as I reluctantly faced the cold winter ahead.
