Soon the Scene Will Change

In the distance
where light kisses the dark,
still out of sight,
lobster boats slice the surface to the pier–
soon a silhouette of home.
It's low tide on the coast.
Barnacles hug the greening pylons,
wait in silence for the turn.
Soon, sun-drenched gravel will shuffle aloud
the arrival of the moment
when boat crews meet the buyers–
the first up the ladder from the water,
the second down the wharf path from the road
while a community of retired signature buoys
hang for sale to curious tourists
who will soon, wave after wave,
flood the fish house with blabber,
take selfies in this quiet life,
unaware how life this side of the line
has its mirror below.
