Cairn
by Sharmagne Leland-St. John

Carefully she piles the stones
to mark the mountain's summit.
Stacks flat rock on boulder,
round precariously perched
on oval, elliptical on slab.
Teetering testimony
that she has passed through
this stony, barren terrain.

Aligned to solstice and equinox
they stand at sunrise and sunset,
where mountains rose from prairie,
where singing rivers run,
where water tumbles over lips of crag,
where Chinook winds whisper
her destiny.
Where it is written in stone.
