Waking Up in Alaska
After a photo by Karla Linn Merrifield
by Michael Escoubas

As she stands before the wide expanse
of sea, on the portico of her room,
wind chafes her cheeks, jagged
mountain peaks
wear unkempt white beards,
sun-tinted blue sky hints at a secret
known not by human intellect
but sensed in the oceanic depths
of her heart—

what she came here to find
has been hers all along simply
for the seeking—
her very own small pocket
of stillness.
