Beyond Ground Zero
by Sheri Lindner

With no commissions or
architectural designs,
uncounted altars
are erected
all over this city
sprung unbidden
in the moment that created
need for memory
as fine dust ash
gray and black
hallowed drift-stuff settled
that late summer day
on window sills
of New York City apartments
whose tenants
can not bear to wipe it away.
