Cape Cod Evening
by Candace Armstrong
after the painting by Edward Hopper, 1939

A cape breeze chills me
even as sunset colors
the long grass golden.

Arms wrapped around myself,
I stand outside near the bay window
of my immaculate house. The red trim
on our white clapboard Victorian
is my idea of cheer.

My husband coaxes the collie, her legs
mostly hidden in tall grass, to play fetch.
But her attention is on a far-off sound,
pitched beyond our hearing.

The dusk of the dark pine woods
nudges ever nearer.
