Winter Suspense
by Annie Jenkin
(A Huitan inspired by “Church and Landscape” by Edward Hopper)

Lofty, lifeless trees draw the eye,
a landscape drained by bitter cold
as chilled air, and snow occupy
all space, colours muted, controlled.

Did Hopper pause his brush to hold
life in suspense? Wait to release
hope? At the last minute, be bold
use warm winter hues to bring peace?
