The Journey
by Denis O'Neill

II

The comfort of stories
told and retold,
settles on us like an old quilt.
Look at the sweet bloom of youth
in those pictures!
Doing the same things
we do now:
holding the trout close to the camera
to make them look bigger…
rowing red and blue boats
under a Big Sky
filled with snow and rain
as often as sun.
Down legendary rivers,
the Madison, the Gallatin…
mythical, watery highways
that have lost count of those
who have passed by,
named after mortals
in high office.
