The Journey
by Denis O'Neill

IV

We know how it ends,
though not exactly.
I had this thought
while sitting in a café in Paris,
not far from a river (the Seine),
watching people flow by.
I thought that perhaps Americans
cared more about destination,
and Europeans more about
the journey.
And that maybe because
the destination is a given,
enjoying the journey
is the way to go.
Fishing friends have always
known that,
and reinforced that.
It is never about the catching,
it is always about the fishing.
The journey.
It never gets old,
only we do.
