The Gift of Books
by Elayne Clift
Banned, borrowed, or bought,
Where better to read a book
Then a library, window box,
Couch, bed or beach.
Novel, non-fiction, prose, poetry,
Carefully crafted, lovingly labored over,
Drafted, revised, reconsidered into existence,
A gift to the world, and those who relish reading,
Armchair experience, validation, hope.
Whether Pulitzer perfect, or flawed,
Brilliant or banal,
Every book deserves a prize,
A gold star and a smile of gratitude,
For the gift of words and perhaps wisdom.
Let those who ban fade into obscurity,
Let children learn the thrill of page-turning.
Let the would-be author try and try again.
Let the joy of books be ours,
And may we embrace reading into eternity.
