ABOUT THE BOOK:
The unusual word “Esemplastic” refers to a “blending of opposites,” or “shaping disparate things into a coherent whole.” In a world that, at times, seems more fractured than whole, Karian Markos’ collection Esemplastic: Many and One is an intriguing read which offers unique insights into the human condition.
ADVANCE PRAISE:
Esemplastic: Many and One by Karian Markos is a sequence of illuminating meditations on everyday life and the significance of small moments. In crystalline, image-driven poems, Karian Markos examines themes such as mortality, the quest for completeness, and wisdom gained on the journey to adulthood.
–Mary Biddinger, author of Department of Elegy
Karian Markos’ lush language and vivid imagery take us on a flight into her diverse worlds, provoking thought, and reflection into our own. Esemplastic: Many and One is a gorgeous collection of poetry that is not to be missed.
–Maria A. Karamitsos, Journalist, Author, and Poet.
From the contemplative and evocative in “Nostos” and “To the Winds” to the metaphysical and transcendent in “Expression of the Divine Alphabet” and “Eternity”–with detours into the grounded and every day with “Sunday” and “Weapon of Choice”–this collection captures an expanse of human emotion and existential query, weaving a deeply personal yet univer-sally resonant dialogue with the soul. It’s an intimate whisper and a resounding echo.
–Gabriel Gale, Creator of the Ages of Oz series and The Art of Oz

FROM THE BOOK:
Summer’s End
by Karian Markos
my summer is coming to an end
a smolder, skin barely a flush
desire’s wily arms slacken and sag
the seat of creation shifts
from belly to mind
my summer is coming to an end
rose colored, it hangs low in the sky,
cicadas decrescendo, bees prepare
for dearth, emptiness fills the vacancies
I am needed less, wanted less
my summer is coming to an end
my autumn is beginning
night chews the edges of day
mind skips the foreshortened winter
sees itself breach the horizon
my summer is coming to an end
a flicker in falling leaves
it kneels breathless at autumn’s feet
begs a Monarch on a parallel path to extinction
to ferry her to timelessness on his velvet wings
