Remorse In April
by Elisabeth Hallett

the birds are surprised
to find my screen gone
and I am surprised
that I can see the sky through their wings

there is a little rain that falls
while the sun sets
and I think I will live after all
today, anyway. . . perhaps
tomorrow. After that who knows
if rain will be falling)

                 how easy
                 to let go
                 and slip
                 in soft dark,
                 out of my mind

I am going to break this girl's will.
I will make her forget hope and
forget fear; crush all her thoughts
like burned-down cigarettes
and maybe then I will be able
to live with her.
