Step
by Scott Shaffer

“O you tender ones, step now and then
into the breath that takes no heed of you.”
                                    –Rainer Maria Rilke

Step into the boundless breath,
though it takes you where it will,

and you know not where it goes.
Step into it, and stop, …

That’s right … stop.
Don’t move. Wait.

Take hold of its hand–
a gentle yet granite grip.

Keep in no-step with it …
until you sense its tug.

Consecrate
your weakness to it,

as it carves you into a spring
whose waters never fail …

then pours from you
streams alive forevermore.
