Ruzka's Smile
by Allan Wexler

It haunts me.
Gazing out from a
sepia photograph,
she was present at
the worst moment
in our history.

Dressed in a captured tunic,
holding her machine pistol
beside the dour Abba and
the sweet smiling Vitka,
the little Polish girl grins
almost maniacally,
enjoying her vengeance.
