ABOUT THE BOOK:

In this hilarious and heartfelt travelogue, Rick Lupert explores the wilds of Vancouver, Alaska, and the Yukon with his signature poetic wit. From donut tours and steam clocks to bald eagles, bears, and the elusive moose, High Moose Alert captures the absurd beauty of life on the road–with plenty of snacks along the way. Whether you’re a frequent traveler or armchair explorer, these poems offer a front-row seat to the joy, weirdness, and wonder of the world.

ADVANCE PRAISE:

Vancouver is the loneliest city on Earth. I still like it.
–Douglas Coupland City of Glass

It’s the beauty that thrills me with wonder,
It’s the stillness that fills me with peace.

–Robert W. Service The Spell of the Yukon

We need wilderness whether or not we ever set foot in it.
We need a refuge even though we may not ever need to go there.

–Edward Abbey Desert Solitaire

Tomorrow, I’m leaving for Alaska. I’m going to find an ice
cold creek near the Arctic where that strange, beautiful
moss grows and spend a week with the grayling. My
address will be, Trout Fishing in America, c/o General Delivery,
Fairbanks, Alaska.

–Richard Brautigan, Trout Fishing in America

FROM THE BOOK:

All of This is Normal

by Rick Lupert

I want to tell you we dropped our kid
off at camp today, but the truth is
he was driving the car.

Our kid drove himself to camp today.
This has never been written before.
We were in the car.

We experienced it. The double whammy
of our boy who used to be a toddler
with cheeks from here to eternity

operating a motor vehicle on the
freeways of Los Angeles, on his way
to eight weeks away … maybe nine–

I can’t bear to look at the calendar.
Speaking of bears, we’re going to Alaska
where we hope to see one.

Alaska has made no promises. Someday,
we won’t be in the car when he drives
from place to place. Someday he won’t even
live in our house. None of this is normal.

Vêtements
by Rick Lupert

Pickle underwear
and coffee t-shirt.
You heard me right.
Vancouver, I’m ready
for anything.

High Moose Alert
by Rick Lupert

I ask every
stranger we meet on the trail
if they are a moose.
