Orchards in Blossom, by Vincent Van Gogh, 1889

An Old Orchard in Spring
by Gay Williford

In a wildflower-filled meadow
old fruit trees lean frailly–
pushed askew by long-ago wind storms.
These old trees are just beginning
to leaf and bud–one with
blackened dead limbs
still reaches sunwards, while others
persist waving new green growth.
A small French town resides
in the background–dark, spindly firs
rise above orange-tiled rooftops and
a stone tower looms over all–
stating a solemn dominance.
Spring has arrived here with its
swollen river’s waters and prospects
of soon-to-be fruit blossoms.
