Orchards in Blossom, by Vincent Van Gogh, 1889

The Orchard in Arles
by Vaughn Neeld
                        –for Vincent

Pale yellow blossoms adorn the ragged branches
of wind-blasted trees in the ancient orchard
where dandelions gleam yellow
among tufts of spring-green grass.

In the distance, the drowsing town’s
red-roofed buildings snug up against
the church whose blunt tower
rises to nudge wispy clouds.

The scene reflects the conflict
that rages in the artist’s life–
the ragged trees lean back,
jagged limbs writhe upward
as if to beseech the blossoms
for a blessing, succor.

We stand afar to view the beauty of his vision–
witnesses to the beauty and horror of his tormented life.
