Orchards in Blossom, by Vincent Van Gogh, 1889
Serenity in Stillness
by Elayne Clift
He was a troubled soul,
But Van Gogh knew. He knew
That old trees could shake their arms,
And young trees could reach their fingers
Up high to wave at slow moving rivers.
He knew that river roadways offer respite
In quiet flow, toward red-roofed cottages,
Busy farms, buildings, and churches,
As pastel flowers stand at attention
In stillness, on green-carpeted orchards in bloom.
He was a wise, private soul who knew
That landscaped patterns in gentle colors,
Gift us with respite in troubled times,
For he himself was troubled,
And found relief in pastures and palettes.
