Painting by Richard Sylbert

Bermuda ~ 1954
by Sharmagne Leland-St. John
...after the painting by Richard Sylbert
1928 ~ 2002

The sea sits still beneath
a heavy canopy of slate and ash,
weathered houses peek through
dense tangles of greenery
above the island's brackish shoreline
yet they are not reflected
in the ocean's Prussian blue

Determined brushstrokes
blend land and sea
I wonder,
where have you set your easel
to capture this melancholy scene?
