Invisibly Visible
by jacob erin-cilberto

I perch
upon a chair in the corner
like an old jacket
flung carelessly
with wrinkled abandon

friends walk by
barely notice me
but when they do
tongues zip up
eyes deflect toward an empty doorway

they know my shy demeanor
they try to ruffle my leather
abrasive comments cut and tear
but I refuse to react
I leave my best face staring from

upon a chair in the corner
of my life
adjacent to others
but invisible
until the cold hits them

and I am needed.
