Painting by Richard Sylbert

Port of Profession
by jacob erin-cilberto

looking across the cove
at our little town
I see my dad’s boat adrift
in the rolling waters
he would have been 107 this year
his boat is 40 some-odd years old
but doesn't look it
I constantly wash and polish it
repaint it when the color gets weary
that small craft
reminds me of how Father
was so adept at the craft of fishing
and our days on the lake

we never made a living, fishing in that cove
but spending time with him
was the living I longed for
and the living I miss so much now

the bait was my adolescence
the final catch
the closeness we shared
that needed no net
to land.
