If I were a chair and could talk …
by Michael Escoubas

I wonder, why all the fuss
just because no body finds me attractive.

In fact, I’m quite content simply being
who and what I am … you might say

that I’m a vessel of sorts … a servant
seeking only to help those who need me.

I don’t discriminate. I let my friends
be whomever they are. I have my favorites though.

If you’re tired, if you’re alone, if enemies
surround you, if someone has accused

you falsely … I’m here for you,
a place to rest upon a chair in the corner.

Sit a while, rearrange my corner of the floor,
until you’re comfortable, until I’m

just the right fit for you. With me, you can
catch your breath, exhale deeply, light

a cigarette, dream of that special moment
when justice visits you like a lover

in the night. All of this I offer you,
as we become one. I’m only a chair

holding you in love. At any hour of the night,
you are there, upon a chair in the corner.
