Winter at Ojo
by Sharmagne Leland-St. John
...after the photo by the author

On this riparian flood plain
The bosque of cottonwoods,
mesquite and desert olive
pose naked.

This springtime canopy of verdant forest
along the Rio Gande,
now stand, bare of foliage, waiting
for the next snowstorm.

A crosshatch of spider-web patterns
lace against a pale blue sky.

Picnic table abandoned,
for the warmth of the cabins,
the heat of the ancient thermal pools.

Patches of snow recede
with winter's sunlight.
Not a squirrel or Jackdaw in sight!
