Sunrise

Taos Sunrise
by Sharmagne Leland- St. John
...after a photograph by the poet

bleak winter morning
cold and brittle
sun trying to break
through a mass
of cirrus clouds

an ocean of ice-laden sage
spreads out
across the landscape
diminishing line leads the eye
to the the high peaks of the
Sangre de Cristos
our sacred mountains,

watching the terrain,
unpeopled and still
I long for the warmth
of the wood stove
the scent of Palo Santo
burning in an abalone shell,
the aroma of freshly baked
rye berry bread
waiting to be dipped into bowls
of steaming pumpkin soup.
