Coyote Loves Song
by Lenora Rain-Lee Good
Across the arroyo from my patio
sings Coyote as only they can.
Old ones have a bit of pleading
in their song as a dusting of fresh
snow covers the ground. “We’re old,”
they sing, “with achy bones, rheumy
joints, we beg, send warmth, send sun.”
“No! No! No!” Yip the young as they
frolic in a dusting of fresh snow that
fell during the night. “Send more
and more so we can burrow, make
forts and snowballs and proper igloos
for our elders.” The pleas of the old,
the yips of the young, at least as I
imagine them, assault my ears
from across the arroyo as a dusting
of fresh snow covers the ground.
