Farmland Winter
by Gay Williford

Chilled blue shades surround
a lone, skeletal tree in this snowy field.
It stands dark and leafless but determined–
as if in defiance stating …
it will endure the cold,
it will return in spring!
Nearby, a flag-down mailbox,
topped with a snow Fedora,
lists slightly backwards on its post,
anxiously awaiting deliveries
whose connections are greatly
valued in this isolated farmland.
